We pick up our campervan Wanda and make our way towards Melbs

After our time in Brisbane and Carins, we returned to Sydney to pick up our campervan Wanda. This is going to be our home for 40 days as we travel to Melbourne, onto Adelaide, and back to Sydney. We rented Wanda through a company called Campify. Campify operates in Australia, New Zealand, Spain, and the UK. It is basically the AirBnb of campervans. Some are owned by private owners and there also appears to be some businesses as well. The vans on Campify tend to be a bit more #vanlife but there are larger outfitters that also rent out various types of campervans. We saw a lot of Jucy vans in NZ, but heard a couple of horror stories. The most popular ones in AU seem to be Apollo and Maui. In the States we previously rented from Escape Campervans - they have several locations, and offer a service very similar to Camify, they also rent out of NZ.

We decided that we wanted to keep our driving days to around a 3-hour maximum. Below are the places we visited and the holiday parks we stayed in plus our overall viewpoint on the parks and the towns. Keep in mind that these are just our personal opinions.

Royal National Park - 1 hour outside of Sydney. Massive and stunning. Highly recommend stopping there for at least a day and doing a hike.

Bulli Beach Tourist Park - 1.5-2 hours from Sydney. Nice amenities. You are right on top of your neighbors so by no means a ‘nature’ park. Right on a beautiful beach and a very long paved walking and biking path. There are a couple of restaurants and cafes within walking distance.

Jervis Bay / Holiday Haven White Sands - 1.5-2 hours from Bulli Beach. Very similar to Bulli as far as facilities, and proximity to the beach. You could also very easily walk into town, which during the high season should have a good amount of restaurants, bars/pubs, and shops open.

Bateman’s Bay Holiday Resort - 2 hours from Jervis Bay. The holiday park was fine, but a good 45 min walk from the town of Bateman. This is very much a retirement community with a beautiful beach. Not a lot to do besides the beach and shopping. Would not recommend stopping unless you have to and only do one night if you do.

Mimosa Rocks National Park / Gillards Campground - 2 hours from Bateman’s Bay. We LOVED it here and wish we had more than one night. It is primitive - meaning you have to bring everything in and there is only an outhouse, but you are rewarded with being on an incredible beach surrounded in the evening by kangaroos and wallabies.

Eden Beach Front Holiday Park - 1 hour from Mimosa Rocks. The park was great, good location, great amenities, also right on the beach. We really enjoyed Eden and what it had to offer. If you are there during whale migration season - a bonus.

Seaspray Caravan Park / Gippsland - 4.25 hrs from Eden. We WISH we had known about all the hidden treasures in Gippsland before we went on our merry way. Seaspray was an amazing park with the best and cleanest amenities that we have had on this trip. The beach WOULD have been in the top 5 had it not been some of the worst weather we have experienced on the trip. The town of Seaspray has little to offer but the area of Gippsland has tons of hidden gems. Will call them out later. If the weather had been better this may be #2 on our list so far.

Wilsons Promontory / Tidal River Campground - This park is a must-do! It is huge and extremely beautiful. The southernmost point of mainland Australia. Book ahead for the campground. The location is great but the amenities are not. Ok bathrooms, no camp kitchen. There are cabins if you would like to book something that protects you more from the rain. Regardless of the weather, if you are traveling close to this park you must stop.

Philip Island / Park Lane Holiday Park - The location of this park is great, you can walk right across the street to the Koloa Conservatory. However, the spots for campervans, etc. are SUPER tight. They have a lot of amenities but the bathrooms need a serious update.

After Philip Island we headed into Melbs - more on the next leg of our 40 day journey in Wanda coming soon!

We have some recommendations in a few of the places we have visited and stopped at. Deets below!

Jervis Bay -

Rent a beach cruiser from Jervis Bay Bike Hire and stop at Orion Beach or any other perfect-looking spot along the ride. Stop and grab a pint, a pot, or a schooner at Bud’s Tavern on Main Street.

Eden -

Go to the Broadwater Oyster Company and at least get some oysters or take a class or a tour. We did the class and if you listened to the podcast you know how much we loved it and what a deal it was! Highly recommend.

Killer Whale Museum is a fun, informative, small-town museum.

Great Southern Inn is a great place to grab some oysters and a meal, or just a drink. Indoor seating as well as a good-sized back deck (not an amazing view).

Gippsland -

Again, we wish we had known more beforehand, but we went and did a tasting at Loch Brewery and Distillery. Very cute town with some other places to stop, and just down the road we stopped at Gippsland Wine Company and also had a tasting and snack. Beautiful setting, and very affordable. We stayed and talked to the owner forever after - lovely man and we may just go back and pick grapes for him later on. We bought a sparkling red that we are going to enjoy on X-Mas.

Philip Island -

Koala Conservation Reserve makes you feel good about the way you are experiencing these little buddies. They will mostly be sleepy, but they are living the perfect life and you may see some free-range ones as well.

The Penguin Parade is a MUST DO. Get tickets - do not buy the VIP ones, not worth it. You can go sit in their spots when they leave. Bring a towel to sit on. Go early, eat there before they decide to come ashore, and stay late to see them wander up onto the dunes.
